The Best Dog Beds of 2024 | GearJunkie Tested

Oct 17, 2024Oct 17, 2024

As devoted owners of adventurous, active dogs, we recognize the importance of ensuring our furry friends have the best dog bed.

Given the amount of pet-specific brands touting the unique features of their products, navigating the world of online shopping for pet products can be daunting. After all, you can’t exactly ask your dog what they want. These days, dog beds are designed for various purposes, from outdoor-specific beds, waterproof beds, orthopedic beds, packable beds, travel beds, and more. Our team of experts is here to simplify your search and guide you toward selecting the perfect resting place for your best friend.

Dog owners for over 20 years, our experts — ahem, their dogs — tested a range of different dog beds over a year. We put them paw-to-paw in our living rooms and front yards; we brought them car camping, backpacking, and climbing. Based on our testing, we bring you the best dog beds of 2024-2025. Whether you’re looking for the overall comfort and support of our best pick, the HEST Dog Bed, or a budget-friendly option like the Molly Mutt Dog Bed, we cover all the options.

We’ve also included an in-depth buyer’s guide and price & value section so you can dive deeper into picking Fido’s ideal bed. We’ve also included a comparison chart so you can more easily see how they compare.

Editor’s Note: On October 8, 2024, we updated this guide by adding two new products: our new budget pick, the Molly Mutt Dog Bed, and our favorite dog bed for home, the Casper Dog Bed.

The HEST Dog Bed ($149-249) blew our testers away with its simple, straightforward design, superior construction, and added features. One reason it stood out from the rest? Its incredible packabilty. The HEST boasts two integrated compression straps that allow for quick and easy roll-up while a durable handle makes transport a breeze.

If you travel extensively with your dog, then you’re no stranger to the pile of gear required to keep you and your pup happy. The packable, portable construction of this bed allows it to fit into smaller spaces, leaving ample room for other gear.

This bed quickly became a favorite for outdoor use. Its waterproof lower fabric held up against both snowy and rocky surfaces, while the durable, tear-resistant top fabric withstood scratching and digging, and allowed for easy wiping away of dirt and mud. This cover is easily removable and washable. Inside, the foam mattress is encased in an additional waterproof liner, which, in addition to the sturdy stitching and reinforced seams, preserves the bed’s lifespan.

HEST wants to ensure that our dogs experience the same level of comfort we do, so it built its dog beds with the same memory foam found in its human-specific beds. The mattress is constructed with two layers of memory foam–the top layer is a temperature-resilient foam that will keep your dog comfortable no matter the air temperature, and the bottom layer provides support and pressure point relief, making this bed a great choice for active or older dogs that need extra joint care.

Although the HEST Dog Bed lacks the bolsters found in most dog beds, the thoughtful travel features, durability, ease of cleaning, and excellent mattress quality make it well worth the price. If you are an on-the-go dog owner, the HEST Dog Bed is a worthwhile investment.

For an in-depth look at the HEST Dog Bed, check out our full review.

The Molly Mutt Dog Bed ($35-78) offers a stylish and eco-friendly solution for dog owners looking to customize their pet’s sleeping space. Instead of purchasing an entirely new dog bed, this cover (and the included stuff sack) allows you to repurpose old linens, clothing, or blankets as stuffing. This means the bed will smell like you (your dog’s favorite scent!), calming and comforting your dog even when you’re not home. This is a thoughtful, creative take on dog beds.

The bed’s fabric is made from 100% cotton canvas, tough enough to withstand digging, light chewing, and general wear and tear. The fabric is also breathable, helping regulate temperature to keep your dog comfortable. The material has even been tested for harmful chemicals and is harmless for human and pet health, which is a huge win in our books.

Although the canvas is not water-resistant, pet owners can purchase Molly Mutt’s Armor Bed Water-Resistant Liner ($17-29), which is designed to wrap around the stuff sack, then you can stuff the whole bundle into the fabric cover.

The cover arrives pre-shrunk and is fully machine washable, a major plus for maintaining cleanliness, especially for dogs that track in dirt or shed heavily (both of which describe my dog).

By far, the most unique feature of this bed is that it was designed to be stuffed with upcycled materials, like old towels or clothing. This reduces waste and allows you to control the firmness and fill the bed to suit your dog’s needs.

Molly Mutt also offers an add-on bolster pillow, the Pillow Pack (S, M/L, Huge, $20-24), which Velcros around the short side of the bed and provides additional comfort. Of course, we know that having to source and insert your own stuffing isn’t convenient for everyone.

Depending on what you fill the bed with, it might not provide the same level of support as a more structured foam or orthopedic bed. It’s ideal for dogs who prefer softer or more pliable bedding but might not suit those needing extra support.

A really fun feature of this bed is that it is available in a wide range of patterns, so pet owners can choose between minimalist or colorful designs to match your aesthetic. The bed is available in a wider variety of sizes than most dog beds, making this a great choice for pet owners whose dogs fall somewhere between sizes.

It took us a while to find enough old fabric around the house to stuff the bed, but once we did, our dog took to it immediately. When we’re not home, we take comfort in knowing she can curl up in a bed that smells like us, keeping her calm for the hours that we’re away.

The very affordable price of this bed makes it a great choice for pet parents on a budget. Although not made of orthopedic foam, we prefer the Molly Mutt Bed over our other budget option, the FurHaven Orthopedic Dog Bed.

The Molly Mutt Bed is made of more durable fabric, and the stuffing can be easily refreshed with a fresh set of upcycled materials. The FurHaven bed requires owners to buy a new foam insert once the original foam becomes too compressed, and the fabric cover is more susceptible to tearing and is not water-resistant.

The Molly Mutt Bed is a great option for eco-conscious pet owners who want a versatile, washable, and stylish bed for their dog.

Its DIY nature may not appeal to everyone, but it’s a cost-effective way to create a bed tailored to your dog’s needs. While it may not offer the firm support of foam-based beds, it’s perfect for dogs who enjoy a soft, flexible sleeping surface.

We all know that adequate rest and full recovery are keys to a long, happy life. The same goes for our adventure pups; the better they rest and sleep, the more their bodies can rebound from active pursuits, and the healthier they will remain. Enter the Orvis RecoveryZone Couch Dog Bed ($298-449). Its ingenious design combines two very different layers that work in harmony.

Underneath, a solid foam base helps distribute weight evenly to increase circulation and alleviate pressure on muscles and joints. On top, a soft Serene Foam layer regulates body temp and keeps air circulating around your furry friend.

And, thanks to the unique couch design and three-sided bolsters, our tester dogs found they could easily get on and off this bed and could also sleep on this bed all possible ways — curled up, stretched out, and any shape in-between. Our dogs — of various ages and sizes — found that this bed delivers the perfect combo of support and comfort rolled into one.

And, we humans also loved it for a few reasons. Although it required some assembly, the directions are clear and easy to follow, so it only takes a few minutes to get it up and ready for lounging. The machine-washable cover makes it easy to give this bed a much-needed refresh, thanks to our always-shedding yellow lab.

Hidden handles make moving this substantial bed from spot to spot a breeze, and the water-resistant liner protects the underlying foam layer even after a dog, still damp from a swim in the river, passed out on it. And, the personalization option—you can have your pup’s name embroidered on it for an additional $20 — definitely bumps up the aesthetic appeal (and cute factor!). Plus, because it’s made from 90% recycled materials, the Orvis Recovery Zone Dog Bed is a purchase you can feel good about.

One thing to consider when buying this bed: if your dog is a hard-core lounger who stretches out her entire body when resting or sleeping, consider going one size up beyond the recommendations. Though the bolsters do provide awesome support and a sense of security, they also limit total lounging space, so going up a size is probably a good idea.

We got a large for our 75-pound lab and wish we had gone with the extra large, even though website recommendations indicate the large would work. Also, if your dog likes to sink into his or her bed or they are used to a very floppy, soft bed, it may take them a bit to adjust to the firmness of the foam at first. However, we found that with a little bit of time, the Orvis RecoveryZone Couch Dog Bed quickly became our girl’s favorite!

This beefy, supportive, comfy bed will last for years and is ideal for super active adventure dogs of all ages, including both puppies who are just getting started and older dogs who want to recharge faster.

If you do a lot of camping with your dog, whether it’s car camping or backpacking, the Ruffwear Highlands Dog Sleeping Bag ($100-140) will keep your pup comfortable without taking up much space. The synthetic down insulation provides ample warmth and easily compresses to fit into the included stuff sack.

Fully compressed, the medium sleeping bag takes up slightly more space than a Nalgene water bottle — a huge win when space is paramount. Thoughtful features like elastic loops at each corner to stake down the bed, an insulated neck baffle to reduce draft, a water-resistant shell, and an integrated pad sleeve (Highlands Pad sold separately) for extra cushion and insulation make this a standout camping bed.

Much like your own sleeping bag, this dog sleeping bag lacks a padded/foam base. If you want more insulation and cushion for your dog, the Ruffwear Highlands Dog Pad ($40-60) is designed to tuck into the sleeping bag seamlessly. However, if saving space is your goal (e.g., backpacking), we recommend skipping this and instead piling your extra clothes underneath the bag.

When it comes to cleaning, this bed should be treated like your personal sleeping bag. While synthetic down is less sensitive to water and detergents than goose down, it’s important to follow the bed’s washing instructions to extend its life. Cold water, mild detergent, a gentle wash cycle, and a low tumble dry with a tennis ball really does the trick.

If you’ve hemmed and hawed about how to keep your dog warm and comfortable on camping trips–should you pack an extra foam pad, use extra layers of clothing, or, if your pup is small, bundle them into your sleeping bag with you? This dog bed is the answer. Its travel-friendly and insulative properties make it our go-to for camping trips, ensuring our pups are just as comfortable as we are. We rest easy knowing they’re resting easy!

If you want a bed that will keep both you and your pup happy, the Timberdog Ruffrest Sporty ($259-299) is a great choice. This bed functions beautifully at home and on the road and is full of thoughtful features that make it a dream come true for any dog owner.

With a durable nylon base, waterproof mattress liner, and Sherpa fleece topper, this bed will keep your dog comfortable while standing up to the wear and tear of travel and outdoor adventures. The one caveat of the liner is that it makes quite a lot of crinkly noises, which is something to keep in mind if your pup likes to toss and turn, if he/she struggles with strange noises (the bed will take some getting used to!), or if you are a light sleeper.

The bed more than makes up for the noise, however, with its many ingenious characteristics. For starters, the pillow of the fleece topper converts into a sleeping bag that can be zipped around your dog for extra warmth. To keep your dog comfortable, the blanket is not made from the same durable nylon as the bed’s base, so it’s best to keep this stowed away if your dog has destructive tendencies.

Another standout feature: the entire bed unzips like a suitcase to reveal a hanging organizer with plastic zippered pockets. Having a dedicated space for your dog’s belongings, which can be stored within the bed, makes travel even easier. If you want to roll up the bed for quick transport, the medium and large sizes come with compression straps that have their own zippered pocket for storage.

The Timberdog Ruffrest Sporty also includes a mesh water bottle pocket that can hold up to a 48-ounce Nalgene, a medical/emergency ID card and travel checklist, a shoulder strap that doubles as a safety leash, hooded trim on all zippers, and reflective loops on each corner.

We particularly loved the loops, which can be seen at night and can be used to stake the bed into the ground or attach carabiners for hanging the bed up or tying it down. Our testers really appreciated these features and the overall bed’s design — fellow dog lovers clearly made it!

To clean the bed, simply remove the foam and inner organizer and toss the bed in the washing machine. Be sure to let it hang dry, as putting it in the dryer will shrink it.

Of course, with so many unique features, this dog bed is more expensive, which may deter some dog parents. The noisy nature of the bed, coupled with the fact that you may not want or need every feature this bed offers, may make it hard to shell out this amount of cash. However, if you are looking for a workhorse of a bed that takes the hassle out of travel and is made with love and care, this is a fantastic choice.

To learn more about the Timberdog Ruffrest, take a look at our in-depth review.

The Ruffwear Mt. EverRest Dog Cot ($180) is a fantastic rugged, durable, elevated dog bed that is sure to keep both you and your canine companion happy. The cot style of this bed keeps your dog cool and comfortable even on hot days, and the raised platform keeps them off the ground, providing insulation from cold surfaces and preventing moisture buildup.

The bed’s durable frame is made from lightweight yet robust aluminum. It can support dogs up to 80 pounds and comes together with a single shock cord. Dirt easily wipes off the water-resistant microsuede topper, and a simple machine wash and hang dry will make this bed look brand new.

Although this cot looks great in a home, it’s designed for portability and convenience, making it ideal for camping, hiking, or travel. Whether you’re at a trailhead, the beach, or a campsite, this bed will ensure your dog has a comfortable spot to rest and recover. Setup is quick and easy, and the included carrying bag allows for hassle-free portability.

Priced competitively, the Ruffwear Mt. EverRest Dog Cot offers excellent value for pet owners seeking quality, comfort, and durability. Compared to other dog cots on the market, this cot delivers comparable features and performance at a reasonable price point.

With its combination of comfort, durability, portability, and ease of assembly, this cot is a worthwhile investment for pet owners looking to provide their furry companions with a comfortable and supportive resting place.

Casper, known for its human mattresses, applied the same expertise to create The Dog Bed ($139-249), ensuring it meets a high standard of comfort for pets. Constructed with memory foam, this bed provides excellent support, especially for older dogs or those with joint issues.

The supportive foam base mimics the pressure-relieving quality found in human mattresses, offering a durable yet cozy resting spot. The bolstered edge offers additional support and is perfect for dogs who love to rest their heads on something or for those who prefer to feel cocooned while they sleep.

However, the bolster could make stepping into bed difficult for older dogs or those with joint issues, so if you need a supportive bed for an older dog, you may prefer the Orvis RecoveryZone Couch Dog Bed. Additionally, the firmness of the foam could take some getting used to. Once broken in, though, this bed promises to hold its shape, ensuring a supportive sleeping surface for years.

One of the highlights of this bed is the durable cover, designed to withstand moderate chewing and scratching. The microfiber material mimics the sensation of pawing at loose earth, making it a great choice for dogs who like to dig before lying down. You also won’t have to worry about the fabric tearing. As an added bonus, it’s machine washable, making cleaning the bed a breeze.

One thing to note is that the fabric is not water-resistant. To avoid mold buildup in the memory foam, we suggest steering your dog away from the bed if you both went for a swim or got caught in a particularly heavy rain storm. We found that wiping away dirt and stains was not as easy with this bed as with others, so we had to wash it more often.

Of the home-specific dog beds we reviewed, the Casper Dog Bed is by far our favorite choice. Although it is one of the more expensive options, the durable construction and use of memory foam make it worth the price. This bed provides superior comfort and looks great in any home.

The minimalist design fits in with any design, and Casper offers three colors to choose from (blue, gray, and sand). Thoughtful additions such as sewn-in pockets to hide metal zippers (which protect floors from being scratched) and dig-proof fabric show us that the team at Casper took great care in designing this bed.

If you’re worried about whether your dog will love this bed and are therefore hesitant to spend the money, Casper offers a 30-night risk-free trial, and returns are free. The company’s superior customer service is the final selling point for our team. Bottom line: We can’t say enough good things about the Casper Dog Bed!

The FurHaven Orthopedic Dog Bed ($29-118) is a great choice for dog owners sticking to a budget. This simple, straightforward bed offers orthopedic foam that supports your dog’s joints and pressure points, making it ideal for older or active dogs. The egg crate foam design also allows for better air circulation.

However, the foam is thinner and flimsier than that of other beds, and over time, the FurHaven has degraded and will definitely have a shorter lifespan than others. If you want a more durable, budget option, try the Molly Mutt Bed.

The faux fur and suede cover is extremely soft, enhancing comfort, and is easy to remove and toss in the washing machine. However, it is not tear- or water-resistant, making the bed ideal for home use only and for dogs who are not super chewers. The FurHaven offers water-resistant mattress liners and replacement covers on its website, as well as extra foam inserts.

If this is something you expect to need down the line, the FurHaven Orthopedic bed will become more expensive and you might be better off spending more money with your initial bed investment.

If you want a dedicated spot in your car for your dog — and you want that spot to stay relatively clean — the Backcountry x Petco Bed Seat Cover ($130) is created for just such a purpose. Made from durable, waterproof fabric that has been treated to inhibit the growth of odor-causing bacteria, this bed will withstand anything your dog throws at it.

Cleverly designed, this bed attaches to your car’s seat with three simple pieces: two webbing straps that buckle around the seat — one around the base and one around the headrest — as well as an anchor that slides into the seam between your car’s backrest and the seat. When not in use, the bed zips into itself for easy transport since the longer webbing strap doubles as a shoulder strap.

We also appreciate all the attention to detail in its design. For example, an included tether clip keeps your pup in place while a reversible cushion offers a soft, cozy side (which seems easy to tear into) and a durable, water-resistant side that can be interchanged depending on how muddy your dog is after a day of exploring.

The cushion is removable and washable, and the bowl shape of the bed catches all the dirt and makes cleanup a breeze. Lastly, the majority of the bed is made with durable fabric that can withstand tearing, digging, and chewing, ensuring it will last for countless adventures.

One downside to this bed is its small size. It seems designed mostly to hold dogs while they are sitting. Any medium-to-large dog that tries to lie down on this bed will not fit on its cushion so we would love to see larger sizes available to suit pups who like to catch some Zs while traveling alongside their owners.

The Barbour Wax/Cotton Dog Bed ($100-180) has a stylish Tartan design, making it great for the home. The waxed cotton liner is durable, resists tearing from scratching, digging, and chewing, and is also resistant to water — a great feature for pups who love to swim. The reversible cushion allows you to swap between fleece or cotton, upping the ante when it comes to coziness.

For pups who need an extra feeling of security, the high sides of this bed aim to accomplish just that, while the dropped front allows for easy access for canines with mobility issues.

Although the waxed cotton fabric holds up against the gamut of trials dogs tend to throw at beds, it is not removable or machine washable. As a rule, waxed cotton should not be machine washed or dry cleaned and should be kept away from hot water and harsh detergents, all of which will remove the wax coating.

The inner cushion can be washed by hand using cold water and a mild or wax cotton-specific soap/spray, but the polyester interior and fleece siding make it slow to dry. Spot cleaning is best for this material. However, the benefit of waxed cotton is that the fabric can be re-waxed, allowing it to remain resistant to abuse and water throughout its life.

Although only tested for 2 months, the polyester cushioning seems to compress easily, likely shortening the lifespan of this bed. However, numerous humans confirmed the comfort of this bed when lead tester Kelsey ran out of chairs during movie night, and friends used this bed as a seat.

The price of this bed seems high for what it offers, especially compared to other, more feature-heavy beds on this list. However, if you are a dog owner looking for a simple, straightforward (and stylish) bed for your home, the Barbour Wax/Cotton Dog Bed is a good choice.

The Ruffwear Highlands Dog Pad ($40-60) is about as simple and straightforward as a dog bed can be. Its thoughtful design makes it a great choice for on-the-go dog owners. This bed is designed for backpacking, so it is extremely lightweight and folds up accordion style for easy transport.

Despite its minimalist appearance, this dog bed is anything but. The tear-resistant, waterproof base holds up against the elements — snowy, rainy, or rocky surfaces all had little effect on this bed during testing — and the soft microsuede upper is lined with synthetic down to insulate against the cold, hard ground.

Don’t expect a ton of cushioning, however, which would prevent the pad from folding up to fit in a backpack. The bed folds up with a single durable strap, making setup and packing a breeze. Once folded, it fits snugly into a water bottle pocket on a backpack.

If you plan on doing a lot of camping with your dog in colder conditions, this bed might not be enough. We recommend traveling with something else to insulate your dog, whether it’s a small blanket, some extra clothes to wrap your dog in, or the Ruffwear Highlands Dog Sleeping Bag (reviewed above as our “Best Dog Bed for Backpacking”), which is designed with a special sleeve for this dog pad.

To keep this bed clean, simply wipe dirt off the microsuede upper or hand wash it with mild detergent and let it hang dry. Caring for this bed is about as simple as its design.

This thin, minimal, lightweight bed is perfect for dog owners who travel and adventure with their dogs and want an easy-to-transport, simple bed that can fit just about anywhere.

As pet parents, we want to give our dogs the best. Like us, dogs deserve a comfortable place to sleep — one to call their own, even if they spend most nights sleeping on (a.k.a. taking over) our beds. Lead tester and reviewer Kelsey Wellington has been a dog owner all her life and, given the very active lifestyle she and her dogs lead, she understands the importance of a quality dog bed for her best friend.

Kelsey and her Husky mutt, Talus, tested out these beds over a period of two months. Editor Chris Kassar, also a dog owner and dog lover for decades, contributed by testing a couple of beds with the help of her 10-year-old yellow lab, Nala, and Nala’s boyfriend, Archer (who often spends the night), also chimed in with his opinion.

We brought the travel-specific beds on numerous late winter/early spring trips, subjecting them to a variety of environmental conditions. The less portable beds went through a rigorous testing process indoors, comparing ease of assembly, washability, durability, comfort, and support. We also shared the beds with friends and their pups, testing out the beds on different dog preferences and personalities (e.g., destructive dogs).

In addition to having our dogs test them, we admit that we did curl up for a nap or two on each product (in the name of work!) just to see how they felt on our sore joints and muscles. We also had friends use them while sitting around the house and asked for feedback on their experience.

Throughout these field tests, we determined the best dog beds based on comfort, materials, durability, hygiene, packability, versatility, and value.

The average dog spends about 50% of their time sleeping and another 30% lounging, which means providing our best friends with a dedicated resting spot — one that is comfortable and secure — is hugely important.

The wide array of styles, sizes, thicknesses, and materials of dog beds can make finding the perfect bed a daunting task. If only our furry companions could vocalize their preferences, shopping for a dog bed would be a breeze.

However, you are armed with a deep knowledge and understanding of your dog’s preferences and needs, including their individual sleeping style, their activity level, their recovery requirements, and their preference for certain types of fabrics and materials.

Use this as a starting point when bed shopping, and allow this guide to steer you in the right direction. And, if your pup is an adventure dog who could benefit from a sweet harness, check out our guide to Best Dog Harnesses to find the perfect one for your best friend.

Does your dog curl into a ball when he/she sleeps? Is he/she an unapologetic spreader, taking up most of your mattress? Does your dog prefer to rest her head on a pillow or blanket, or lean up against something? Based on this knowledge, you can narrow down your selection to a specific bed shape:

Consider the size and breed of your dog, opting for a bed that provides enough space for them to stretch out comfortably. Larger breeds may require larger beds to accommodate their size, while smaller breeds may prefer cozier options. Pay attention to weight recommendations as well, ensuring the bed can adequately support your dog’s weight. (This is especially important for cot-style beds.)

A bed that is too small can cause discomfort and restrict movement, while one that is too large may not provide the sense of security that dogs often seek in their resting place. Take measurements of your dog when they are lying down in their natural sleeping position to determine the appropriate bed size and choose accordingly.

Prioritizing comfort is essential for ensuring your furry friend’s well-being. Consider factors such as the bed’s cushioning and support, particularly if your dog is elderly or has joint issues. Look for beds with ample padding to provide a soft and supportive surface for your dog to rest on. Memory foam or therapeutic padding like in the FurHaven Orthopedic Bed can help alleviate pressure points and relieve achy joints.

Additionally, consider the bed’s height and accessibility, as elderly dogs may find it easier to access beds with lower profiles, reducing the strain on their joints when climbing in and out. For active dogs prone to muscle fatigue or injury, opt for beds with firm support as we see in the Orvis Recovery Zone Couch Dog Bed to help maintain proper alignment during sleep, aiding in recovery and muscle relaxation.

The materials used in the bed also play a crucial role in comfort, so opt for soft and cozy fabrics that your dog will enjoy snuggling into like we found in the Barbour Wax/Cotton Dog Bed. Common outer materials include durable fabrics like canvas, polyester, or microfiber which are known for strength and easy maintenance.

These materials are used in the Ruffwear Highlands Dog Sleeping Bag and are often resistant to tearing and scratching, making them ideal for outdoor use or for dogs who are rough on their beds. If your pooch has a destructive streak, you might want to consider beds made from heavy-duty canvas or any form of thick, durable fabric.

For the inner padding, options range from traditional polyester fiberfill to various types of foam, offering varying levels of support and comfort. Polyester fiberfill is affordable, insulative, lightweight, and washable, although it is not highly durable and may need to be replaced after only a few washes.

It is also hypoallergenic, making it ideal for dogs with allergies. While polyester fiberfill offers excellent support for smaller dogs, larger dogs can compress the filling, reducing the amount of support.

Foam beds like the Orvis Recovery Zone Couch Bed can come in many fill types, including memory foam, egg crate foam, and high-density foam. Memory foam contours to your dog’s body, relieving pressure points and providing orthopedic support, which is especially beneficial for senior dogs or those with joint issues.

Egg crate foam has a textured surface resembling an egg carton. This design helps distribute weight evenly, reducing pressure points and providing gentle support. High-density foam is known for its durability and resilience, making it suitable for dog beds that endure heavy use or rough play. This type of foam retains its shape over time, ensuring long-lasting support and comfort for your dog.

Durability is a key consideration when selecting a dog bed to ensure it withstands the wear and tear of daily use by our beloved pets. Look for dog beds constructed from high-quality materials known for their strength and resilience like those found in the Backcountry x Petco Bed Seat Cover. Outer covers made of durable fabrics like canvas or polyester last longer.

Additionally, consider the bed’s stitching and construction, opting for reinforced seams and sturdy zippers that can withstand scratching, digging, and nesting behaviors. Inner padding materials like memory or high-density foam offer excellent durability, maintaining their shape and support over time. Beds with removable, machine-washable covers are also advantageous, allowing for easy cleaning and maintenance to prolong the bed’s lifespan.

The ease of cleaning is a crucial factor to consider when choosing a dog bed, as regular cleaning helps maintain a hygienic sleeping environment for your furry friend. Opt for beds with removable covers that are machine washable and allow for effortless cleaning and maintenance.

Additionally, look for beds with water-resistant or stain-resistant materials that can be easily wiped clean with a damp cloth for quick spot cleaning. Beds with non-absorbent materials help prevent odors and bacterial growth, ensuring a fresh and clean sleeping surface for your pet.

Consider the bed’s design and construction, choosing models with simple and straightforward assembly to facilitate cleaning. If you plan on bringing your dog bed on your outdoor adventures, consider a bed with a waterproof or water-resistant bottom like the Ruffwear Highlands Dog Pad.

If you and your pup lead active lifestyles or frequently travel together, the packability of a dog bed may be something to consider. Look for beds like the HEST Dog Bed and Timberdog Ruffrest Sporty that are lightweight and easy to transport. Travel-specific beds will have collapsible (i.e., a roll-up bed) or foldable designs for compact storage.

These beds will typically have carrying handles or storage bags for added convenience when on the go. Or, if you’re going to cover some serious miles with your pup, you’ll want to check out the Ruffwear Highlands Dog Sleeping Bag, packable and lightweight enough to carry along on backpacking trips. If you do take your dog backpacking or hiking frequently, check out our guide to Best Dog Backpacks for our favorite picks.

Do you want a dog bed that can be used indoors and outdoors? Beds with a waterproof or water-resistant base are suitable for any environment. How about a bed that offers different levels of comfort? Some beds have removable or interchangeable components, such as bolsters or pillows, that provide customizable comfort for your pet.

What about features for travel? Numerous dog beds have handy extras such as travel pouches for all your pup’s gear, removable sleeping bags, rollup buckles and shoulder straps, and leashes. Keep your lifestyle in mind when choosing between the various offerings of different beds to ensure you and your dog get the most out of the one you choose.

Dog beds come in a wide range of prices, typically starting at around $20 for basic options and climbing to $300 or more for high-end, orthopedic, or luxury designs. Basic beds, often made with simple polyester or fleece, are affordable but lack the durability and support needed for larger or older dogs.

Mid-range beds, between $50 and $150, usually offer features like memory foam, durable fabrics, and bolstered edges for added comfort and support. At the high end, premium beds with orthopedic memory foam, eco-friendly materials, and advanced durability features can provide long-lasting comfort, especially for aging dogs with joint issues.

Budget dog beds can be a great option for pet owners looking for basic comfort and functionality without breaking the bank. These beds, typically priced under $100, offer varying levels of support and durability depending on their construction.

The FurHaven Orthopedic Dog Bed, for example, is one of the more popular affordable options. It has egg-crate orthopedic foam, which provides moderate support for dogs with joint pain or older dogs, and comes in various sizes to suit different breeds. The bed’s faux fur cover is soft, and it has bolstered edges for dogs who like resting their heads on a raised surface. While it’s not the most durable choice for heavy chewers, it strikes a great balance between comfort and price.

For dog owners seeking eco-friendly and customizable options, the Molly Mutt Dog Bed offers an affordable yet unique alternative. Priced lower than many pre-filled beds, it allows owners to upcycle old clothing or linens as stuffing. This not only saves money but also allows you to control the firmness and comfort level of the bed.

While it lacks the orthopedic foam of pricier beds, its durable cotton canvas construction holds up well to everyday use. Both the FurHaven and Molly Mutt beds demonstrate that budget-friendly dog beds can still offer comfort, customization, and support, making them excellent choices for owners looking to balance cost and quality.

Mid-tier dog beds, typically priced between $100 and $200, offer enhanced comfort, support, and durability, making them a great investment for pet owners seeking more than basic options. The HEST Dog Bed is a standout in this category, especially for adventurers who often travel with their pets. It has two layers of memory foam for both comfort and support, making it ideal for dogs with joint issues or those who need extra cushioning.

The bed is designed for durability, with a waterproof, machine-washable cover, making it suitable for outdoor use. Its portability is a big draw, as it rolls up easily for camping trips or car rides.

The Casper Dog Bed is another mid-tier option known for its premium build quality. It uses pressure-relieving memory foam similar to Casper’s human mattresses, offering excellent support for dogs of all ages. This bed is particularly beneficial for older dogs or breeds prone to joint problems.

Its bolstered sides provide a cozy space for dogs who like to rest their heads, and its durable microfiber cover stands up to moderate wear and tear. While priced higher than many basic dog beds, its durability and comfort justify the cost for pet owners looking for a long-term solution.

For those who need a bed that’s versatile for both indoor and outdoor use, the Ruffwear Mt. EverRest Cot is a great option. Priced in the mid-tier range, this cot-style bed elevates your dog off the ground, providing better airflow and reducing the risk of exposure to damp or uneven terrain.

Its sturdy, collapsible frame is lightweight, making it ideal for camping, and the cot’s durable fabric can withstand the rigors of outdoor adventures. While it may not offer the same level of cushioning as foam-based beds, it’s perfect for active dogs who spend a lot of time outside.

Premium dog beds like the Orvis RecoveryZone Couch Dog Bed are designed with advanced materials, such as orthopedic memory foam, to offer maximum comfort and support, particularly for older dogs or those with joint issues. With bolstered sides for head support and a pressure-relieving foam base, these beds ensure restful sleep and long-term joint health. The bed also has a water-resistant liner and a removable, washable cover for easy maintenance, making it both functional and durable.

While premium beds come with a higher price tag — often over $300 — the investment is worthwhile for pet owners seeking long-lasting comfort and health benefits for their dogs. In addition to orthopedic support, beds like the Orvis RecoveryZone offer aesthetic appeal, available in various colors to complement home decor. Their durability and thoughtful design make them an excellent choice for those prioritizing both comfort and style.

A dog bed serves a variety of purposes:

The lifespan of a dog bed can vary depending on factors such as the quality of materials, the dog’s size and behavior, and how well the bed is maintained. A good-quality dog bed made from durable materials and sturdy construction can last anywhere from 3 to 5 years or even longer with proper care. However, beds made from cheaper materials or with less robust construction may wear out more quickly, requiring replacement sooner.

Regular cleaning and maintenance, such as washing removable covers, vacuuming, and spot cleaning, can help prolong the lifespan of a dog bed by preventing the buildup of dirt, hair, and odors. Additionally, monitoring your dog’s behavior and addressing any destructive habits promptly can also help extend the longevity of their bed.

Understanding your dog’s preferences and behaviors can help you determine the type of bed they will like. Observing your dog’s sleeping habits, such as whether they prefer to curl up or stretch out, can guide your choice of bed shape and size. Additionally, consider their favorite sleeping spots around the house and the surfaces they gravitate toward, such as soft couches or cool tile floors, to inform your decision on bed materials and textures.

Some dogs may prefer beds with bolstered edges for a sense of security, while others may prefer flat, open designs. Introducing your dog to different bed options and observing their reactions can also help you gauge their preferences.
